Abstract

Background: Evidence-based practice is a core competency that contributes to improving the quality of care and treatment effectiveness. However, in Vietnam, a gap remains between evidence-based practice training and its application in clinical practice. Therefore, assessing perceptions of evidence-based practice competence among nurses and midwives is necessary to guide appropriate professional development.

Objective: To describe perceptions of evidence-based practice competence among nurses and midwives at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City in 2024–2025 and to identify associated factors.

METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 160 nurses and midwives selected using stratified random sampling from December 2024 to February 2025. Data were collected using the validated Vietnamese version of the Health Sciences–Evidence-Based Practice questionnaire, comprising 60 items across five domains, with a theoretical total score ranging from 60 to 600. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 18 with the Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal–Wallis tests.

Results: The median perceived EBP competence score was 443.00 (382.50–487.25) out of 600, equivalent to 7.38 (6.38–8.12) out of 10. “Beliefs and attitudes” had the highest score (7.91/10), while “Barriers and facilitators” had the lowest score (6.96/10). Work setting was associated with perceived EBP competence; nurses/midwives working in rotating inpatient–outpatient settings had a median score 61 points higher than those working in outpatient settings [489.00 (449.00–552.00) vs. 428.00 (373.75–472.75); p = 0.008]. Participants with experience in applying clinical evidence had a median perceived EBP competence score 31 points higher than those without such experience [459.00 (389.75–505.50) vs. 428.00 (372.75–470.50); p = 0.018]. Previous EBP training was also significantly associated with “Beliefs and attitudes”.

Conclusions: Nurses and midwives had a median perceived evidence-based practice competence score of 443.00/600, equivalent to 7.38/10. Work setting and experience in applying clinical evidence were associated with perceived evidence-based practice competence.
