Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are among the leading causes of increased morbidity, mortality, prolonged hospital stays, and escalated treatment costs for patients in healthcare facilities worldwide. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of hospital-acquired infections and associated factors at Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City in 2025.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using total population sampling of 1,880 inpatients with a hospital stay of ≥ 48 hours (2 days) at the inpatient departments of Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City. Data collection was carried out from 01/06/2025 to 30/06/2025. Data were extracted from medical records and analyzed using Stata statistical software.
Results: The mean age of patients was 46.38 ± 27.42 years, with females accounting for 55.37% of the cohort. Chronic diseases were present in 50.05% of patients, and 32.18% had infections upon admission. Procedural interventions were performed in 76.33% of patients, while 26.22% underwent surgery. Among 1,880 patients, 7 had at least one hospital-acquired infection (HAI), corresponding to a prevalence of 0.37%. The isolated pathogens were predominantly Gram-negative bacteria, with Pseudomonas aeruginosa being the most prevalent. The rate of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria was 25%. In the univariable analysis, healthcare-associated infection was significantly associated with the following factors: underlying medical conditions (p = 0.008), endotracheal mechanical ventilation (p < 0.05), central venous catheterization (p = 0.022), and surgical history (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: The prevalence of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) at the hospital was low (0.37%). Sex, underlying diseases, surgery, and invasive procedures were significantly associated with the prevalence of hospital-acquired infections.
