Abstract

Background: Rezum water vapor thermal therapy (Rezum) is a minimally invasive treatment modality for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The technique has just been introduced recently in Vietnam in 2025 at several medical centers. Therefore, published clinical evidence regarding its outcomes remains limited.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of Rezum therapy in the treatment of BPH at Tam Anh General Hospital, Hanoi.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on all patients with BPH treated by Rezum therapy at Tam Anh General Hospital, Hanoi, up to April 2026. Clinical and treatment outcomes before and after the intervention were analyzed.

Results: A total of 22 eligible patients were included in the study. Compared with pre-treatment values, the median prostate volume decreased significantly from 47 mL (IQR: 40-63.25) to 29.5 mL (IQR: 26-32) after treatment (p < 0.001). 91.9% of patients presented with severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) before treatment, while the remainder had moderate severity. At 1-3 months of follow-up, only one patient (4.5%) was reported to have severe symptoms, 27.3% improved to mild symptoms, and the remaining patients experienced moderate symptoms. The reduction in symptom severity was statistically significant (p < 0.001). No complications were observed, and the vast majority of patients were discharged after a one-day hospital stay. During follow-up, retrograde ejaculation was reported in two patients, whereas no other treatment-related complications were identified.

Conclusions: Rezum therapy showed as a safe and effective minimally invasive treatment option for patients with BPH. The treatment with rapid post-operative recovery, significant improvement in lower urinary tract symptoms and preservation of sexual function. These advantages may provide clinical benefits particularly for elderly patients, comprising the largest proportion of individuals affected by BPH.
