Abstract

Background: Prostate cancer is the most common urological cancer in Vietnam. There have been many studies on prostate cancer in Vietnam, but to date, there has been no study based on the data of the population-based cancer registration on the changes in new prostate cancer patients in Vietnam.

Objectives: To analyse age-specific changes in new prostate cancer patients from the population-based cancer registration in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam from 2003 to 2016.

Methods: Data from 1,202 new prostate cancer cases from the HCMC Cancer Registry were used. New prostate cancer cases by age groups were retrospectively quantified and age -specific changes in new prostate cancer patients in Ho Chi Minh City from 2003 to 2016 were assessed.

Results: According to the HCMC Cancer Registry, from 2003 to 2016,

- The mean age of men with prostate cancer was 72.8 (± 9.9) years. The median age was 74 years.

- Young adults (<50-year-old) comprised 1.9% of new prostate cancer patients (95% CI: 1.7-2.1%). The proportion of young prostate patients was consistent with global rates.

- New prostate cancer patients tended to increase sharply in men aged 50 and over. However, there was no significant change observed in patients under 50.

Conclusions: Between 2003 and 2016, there was a marked increase in new prostate cancer cases aged 50 and over in Ho Chi Minh City. Conversely, the trend for early-onset cases (<50 years old) showed no substantial changes. Although the proportion of early-onset prostate cancer patients remains low, clinical suspicion is warranted in symptomatic men under the age of 50.
