Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of surgical hand hygiene compliance and associated factors among healthcare workers in the Department of Surgery, Anesthesiology, and Resuscitation at Cho Ray Hospital in 2025.

Subjects and methods: This study utilized a descriptive cross-sectional design, conducted from January to April 2025. The sample comprised 360 observations of surgical hand antisepsis opportunities among healthcare workers in the Department of Surgery, Anesthesiology, and Resuscitation, Cho Ray Hospital. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire interview combined with direct observation via a standardized checklist.

Results: The overall surgical hand hygiene compliance rate within the Department of Surgery, Anesthesiology, and Resuscitation was 45%. Significant variation was observed among professional designations: Operating Room staff (70%), surgeons (49.1%) and trainees (20.7%). Statistically significant differences in surgical hand hygiene compliance rates were observed across demographic groups of healthcare workers, including gender, age, professional title, and years of service.

Conclusion: These research offers baseline data regarding surgical hand hygiene adherence in Vietnam, specifically highlighting the involvement and compliance of trainees, which represents an under-represented area in the extant literature. These findings provide a critical foundation for developing and refining future hospital infection prevention and control strategies.
