Abstract

Objectives: To describe the paraclinical and histopathological characteristics and to evaluate the postoperative outcomes of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients diagnosed with gallbladder polyps.

Subjects and Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted on 103 patients diagnosed with gallbladder polyps who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy at Viet Duc University Hospital from January 2021 to December 2024.

Results: Multiple polyps were predominant (76.7%). The rate of polyps ≥10mm in size was 35.0%. Cholesterol polyps were the most common type (83.5%). The incidence of adenocarcinoma was 1.9%, with all cases found in the polyp group ≥10mm. The mean operative time was 58.09 ± 19.1 minutes, and the mean length of hospital stay was 3.7 ± 1.1 days. Post-cholecystectomy syndrome significantly decreased from 34% (at 1 month) to 9.9% (at 6 months). Postoperative quality of life was better than preoperative levels.

Conclusion: Solitary polyps and those ≥10mm in size carry a higher risk of malignancy. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a safe and effective treatment that significantly improves the quality of life for patients with gallbladder polyps.
