SELECTED FACTOR CHARACTERISTICS ASSOCIATED WITH COLORECTAL CANCER AMONG SYMPTOMATIC PATIENTS AT NGHE AN ONCOLOGY HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To describe the selected factor characteristics associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) among patients with symptoms suggestive of colorectal disease at Nghe An Oncology Hospital.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 1,126 patients with symptoms suggestive of colorectal disease who presented for examination and treatment at Nghe An Oncology Hospital from January 2024 to May 2026. Factors associated with CRC were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression.
Results: Among 1,126 patients, 511 (45.4%) were histopathologically confirmed to have CRC. The proportion of CRC was significantly higher among patients aged ≥ 60 years, those living in rural areas, manual workers, and those with an educational level below high school (p < 0.05). Multivariable logistic regression showed that BMI ≥ 23 kg/m², red meat consumption ≥ 100 g/day, smoking, and a family history of cancer were independently associated with CRC (p < 0.05). No independent association was observed for alcohol consumption or a history of colorectal disease.
Conclusion: Several epidemiological and lifestyle factors were associated with CRC among patients with symptoms suggestive of colorectal disease. BMI ≥ 23 kg/m², red meat consumption ≥ 100 g/day, smoking, and a family history of cancer were independently associated with CRC. These findings may contribute to identifying high-risk groups and guiding CRC prevention and early detection strategies.
