Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the treatment outcomes of hospitalized patients with community-acquired pneumonia at the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Can Tho Central General Hospital, during 2025–2026.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 87 patients hospitalized in the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Can Tho Central General Hospital, who were diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia between January and June 2026.

Result: Among the 87 hospitalized patients with community-acquired pneumonia, the proportions of males and females were comparable. The mean age was 74.20 ± 13.49 years, and 87.36% of patients were aged ≥60 years. All cases were of bacterial etiology, and hypertension was the most common comorbidity (73.56%). Combination therapy with two classes of antibiotics was the most frequently prescribed regimen (68.97%), with a β-lactam–fluoroquinolone combination being the most common (16.09%). The mean duration of treatment was 10.92 ± 5.54 days. Clinical improvement was observed in 77.01% of patients, 13.79% showed no clinical change, 9.20% were transferred to another hospital, and no in-hospital deaths were recorded.

Conclusion: Hospitalized patients with community-acquired pneumonia were predominantly older adults with multiple comorbidities. Combination therapy with two classes of antibiotics, particularly a β-lactam–fluoroquinolone regimen, was the most commonly used treatment strategy. Favorable treatment outcomes were achieved, with a high rate of clinical improvement and no in-hospital mortality.
