Abstract

Objective: To investigate the characteristics of knee osteoarthritis among female patients at Vo Truong Toan University Hospital in 2025.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using retrospective medical record review. A total of 114 female patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis according to the 1991 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria, who underwent bone mineral density assessment using quantitative ultrasound (QUS) at Vo Truong Toan University Hospital between January 1 and December 30, 2025, were included.

Result: Most female patients with knee osteoarthritis had bilateral knee involvement (77.2%), whereas 22.8% had unilateral disease. On radiographic examination, Kellgren–Lawrence grade II was the most common stage (66.7%), while grade IV was the least frequent (2.6%). Knee ultrasonography revealed that osteophytes were the most common finding (91.2%), followed by joint effusion (57.0%) and joint space narrowing (27.2%). Several reproductive and hormonal factors were significantly associated with osteoporosis, including late menarche (≥15 years), early menopause (≤45 years), and a menopausal duration of ≥3 years.

Conclusion: Female patients with knee osteoarthritis predominantly presented with bilateral disease, most commonly Kellgren–Lawrence grade II on radiographs, and characteristic ultrasonographic findings such as osteophytes and joint effusion. Reproductive and hormonal factors, including age at menarche, age at menopause, and menopausal duration, were significantly associated with osteoporosis.
