Abstract

Tobacco is a global public health threat, with numerous well-documented negative impacts on human health. Among children, the situation is alarming: up to 40% are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke—a factor linked to hundreds of thousands of deaths and the loss of millions of healthy life-years annually due to illness. The health consequences of tobacco for children are diverse, as their organ systems are still developing and remain more vulnerable than those of adults [1].
The impact of tobacco on children’s physical growth—specifically height—is an area of growing concern. Tobacco can affect a child’s height development through various modes of exposure, each with distinct characteristics: prenatal secondhand exposure (via the mother’s contact with tobacco smoke), postnatal secondhand exposure (direct contact with tobacco smoke), or active smoking during adolescence. Impaired height development can lead to stunted growth, an increased risk of illness and mortality, cognitive impairment, and reduced productivity in adulthood [2].
This study aims to synthesize current scientific evidence regarding the effects of tobacco on height development in children.
