Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the embryological and clinical outcomes of Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) using retrieved sperm at Ha Noi General Hospital and the factors affecting these outcomes.

Method: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted over one year on 146 infertile couples with azoospermia who underwent Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) using retrieved sperm at Hanoi General Hospital from December 2023 to November 2024. Among these, 78 men underwent percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration (PESA), and 68 men underwent microdissection testicular sperm extraction (micro-TESE).

Results: The results showed a fertilization rate of 72.59%; a day-3 cleavage embryo formation rate of 88.28%; a blastocyst formation rate of 62.08%; a clinical pregnancy rate of 77.4%; and a live birth rate of 69.2%. The fertilization rate and blastocyst formation rate in the PESA group were higher than those in the micro-TESE group. There was no difference in clinical pregnancy rates or live birth rate between the two groups. The clinical pregnancy rate was higher in the group with male partners under 40 years old compared to those aged 40 and older.

Conclusion: The use of retrieved sperm for intracytoplasmic sperm injection is an effective treatment method for men with azoospermia, and the age of the male partner may be a factor affecting the outcomes.
