Abstract

Objective: To determine the rate of ABO blood group discrepancies on machine automated and the causes of difficulty in identifying ABO blood groups in patient’s samples at Vietduc hospital in 2024.

Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out from January to December 2024 on 71893 patients for ABO blood grouping using the column agglutination test. If not determine ABO blood groups on automated, to be determined blood groups in vitro using forward and reverse grouping, and patients were supplemented with additional techniques such as antibody adsorption, incubation at 20C to 80C or 370C, serum dilution, red blood cell washing, or ask blood transfusion history.

Results: A total of 294 samples (0.409%) was discrepancies. Among them, 64 samples (0.089%) required additional techniques when the method CAT or in tubes could not determine their blood type. The results showed 5 people with weak antigens, 19 people with weak antibodies, 11 people with abnormal antibodies, 6 people with cold antibodies, 2 people with agglutination red blood cell, and 21 people who received blood transfusions from different ABO blood groups.

Conclusion: the common cause of difficult ABO blood grouping is blood transfusion with different groups, weak antigens, weak antibodies, and less common causes are cold antibodies or agglutination red cell.
