Abstract

Background: Analyzing the inpatient disease pattern of hematologic disorders in provincial general hospitals plays a pivotal role in optimizing human resource allocation, planning patient admission and treatment, and ensuring blood supply.

Objective: To describe the distribution of hematologic and hematopoietic diseases among inpatients treated at the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center, Thanh Hoa General Hospital in 2025.

Methods: A hospital-based retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 1,828 patients (accounting for 5,111 inpatient admissions) confirmed with hematologic diseases classified by ICD-10 from January 2025 to December 2025.

Results: Females accounted for 58.5% and males for 41.5%. Patients aged > 70 years constituted the largest group (19.9%). Regarding ethnicity, Kinh accounted for 72.4% and Muong accounted for 13.8%. The three predominant disease categories were hemoglobinopathies (36.3%), peripheral erythrocyte disorders (25.8%), and hematological neoplasms (23.4%). Within hemoglobinopathies, unspecified thalassemia codes represented 81.3%; among genotyped cases, β-thalassemia constituted 88.7%. Iron-deficiency anemia accounted for 56.9% of peripheral erythrocyte disorders. Among hematological neoplasms, myeloproliferative neoplasms, myelodysplastic syndromes, and acute leukemia accounted for 24.3%, 23.0%, and 19.2%, respectively.

Conclusion: The inpatient hematological disease profile highlights the clinical burden of chronic transfusion-dependent hemoglobinopathies and geriatric hematologic conditions at the provincial level. Enhancing molecular diagnostic capacities for thalassemia and standardizing clinical coding practices are strongly recommended.
