CHARACTERISTICS AND SCREENING OUTCOMES OF BLOOD DONORS AT THE HEMATOLOGY AND BLOOD TRANSFUSION CENTER HUE CENTRAL HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate the characteristics and screening outcomes of healthy voluntary blood donors using the hospital blood donor management system and electronic medical records.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with retrospective data collection was conducted among blood donors at mobile collection sites and the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center, Hue Central Hospital, from October 2025 to April 2026.
Results: Among 18,832 voluntary blood donors, the majority were female (53.4%), aged 18-29 years (49.3%), employed as government officials or civil servants (36.8%), and more than half were repeat donors (56.6%). The overall seropositivity rate was 0.70% (134/18,832), with HBV being the most prevalent (0.31%), followed by HCV (0.25%), HIV (0.08%), and syphilis (0.06%). Additional screening using NAT detected 16 more cases positive for HBV DNA (0.09%). The overall positivity rate increased with age, peaking in the 45-60 age group (1.39%), primarily driven by HBV (p < 0.001). No statistically significant differences were observed by sex, occupation, number of blood donations (p > 0.05).
