PREVALENCE OF ANEMIA AND ITS ASSOCIATION WITH BLOOD GROUP AND AGE AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN ADMITTED FOR DELIVERY AT LE VAN THINH HOSPITAL

Abstract
Objectives: To determine the prevalence of anemia and evaluate its associations with maternal age and ABO blood group among pregnant women admitted for delivery at Lê Văn Thịnh Hospital.
Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study with retrospective data collection was conducted on 831 pregnant women admitted for delivery at Lê Văn Thịnh Hospital. Anemia was defined according to the World Health Organization hemoglobin criteria. The associations of anemia with maternal age and ABO blood group were evaluated using the Chi-square test and multivariable logistic regression analysis.
Results: The prevalence of anemia was 17,45%, with microcytic hypochromic anemia accounting for the highest proportion (68,28%). Anemia was significantly associated with maternal age (p=0,003). Compared with the 20-25 years age group, pregnant women aged 31–35 years (OR=0,57; 95% CI: 0,34–0,95) and those aged ≥36 years (OR=0,49; 95% CI: 0,27–0,89) had significantly lower odds of anemia after adjustment. No significant association was observed between ABO blood group and anemia (p=0,119).
Conclusions: Anemia affected nearly one in five pregnant women admitted for delivery, with microcytic hypochromic anemia being the predominant morphological subtype. Maternal age was significantly associated with anemia, whereas no statistically significant association was found with ABO blood group and anemia.
