Abstract

Cho Ray Blood Transfusion Center has implemented the nucleic acid detection for the viruses HBV, HIV, and HCV since 2015, alongside serological methods, to enhance safety in blood transfusion. The molecular biology technique for nucleic acid testing of viruses enables the early detection of viral presence during the window phase, which current serological methods are not equipped to identify. During the blood screening process at the center, we identified a case of HBV infection in the window period through the nucleic acid screening technique from a repeat blood donor, a subject typically considered low-risk and safe within our blood donation recruitment strategy. This discovery indicates that the screening and selection process prior to blood donation must be rigorously, thoroughly, and correctly implemented for all potential blood donors to ensure the safety and quality of blood at the input stage, contributing significantly to the overall safety of blood transfusion.
