EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF DOUBLE-DOSE PLATELETPHERESIS ON DONORS AND REPEAT PLATELET DONOR RETENTION

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effects of double-dose plateletpheresis and factors associated with repeat donor retention.
Subjects and Methods: A prospective descriptive study included 60 double-dose plateletpheresis donors at Da Nang Hospital from January to September 2025; 6-month return donation was additionally ascertained from donation records through March 2026.
Results: No serious adverse events were recorded; perioral tingling occurred in 36.7% and venipuncture-site hematoma in 3.3%. Platelet count decreased by 37.21%, from 306.50 ± 32.89 to 191.88 ± 32.97 ×10⁹/L. The 6-month return rate was 76.7% (46/60; 95% CI: 64.6–85.6%); 13.3% returned within 1 month and 51.7% within 3 months. Among returning donors, 89.1% were eligible for subsequent donation and 63.0% continued double-dose plateletpheresis. Mild adverse reactions, post-procedure platelet count, and ≥2 previous donations were associated with return donation on univariable analysis (p=0.001, 0.009, and 0.038). Among returning donors, continuation of double-dose plateletpheresis was associated with adverse reactions (p=0.003).
