SUPPLY AND UTILIZATION OF PHENOTYPE-MATCHED RED BLOOD CELLS AT THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEMATOLOGY AND BLOOD TRANSFUSION, 2024–2025
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: To describe the supply and utilization of phenotype-matched red blood cells (phenotype-matched RBCs) at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT) during 2024–2025.
Study design: Cross-sectional descriptive study.
Setting and study period: National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, Vietnam, from May 2024 to April 2025.
Participants: A total of 1,911 patients received phenotype-matched RBC transfusions, and 17,206 units of phenotype-matched RBCs were issued during the study period.
Results: During the study period, NIHBT issued 17,206 units of phenotype-matched RBCs, achieving an overall fulfillment rate of 99.0% of the requested units, including 93.1% supplied on schedule and 5.9% supplied with delay. Most issued units were blood group O (76.3%) and required matching for one to four antigen-negative specificities. The mean utilization was 9.0 ± 4.9 units per patient per year. The fulfillment rate decreased as the number of required antigen-negative matches increased.
Conclusions: The demand for phenotype-matched RBCs at NIHBT was substantial, and the overall fulfillment rate was high. However, supplying phenotype-matched RBCs remained challenging for patients requiring compatibility for multiple antigens. These findings highlight the need to further expand the donor red blood cell phenotype database and develop a phenotype-typed donor registry to improve the availability of compatible blood units.
