Abstract

Background: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is one of the most dangerous infections for organ and stem cell transplant recipients. Testing and selecting blood units from healthy donors without CMV-related risk factors contribute to ensuring the safety of blood units.

Objective: To describe the prevalence of CMVIgM positive blood donors and associated factors at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion in 2024.

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study based on test result records and donor profiles from the blood center management software.

Results: Among the 6,385 blood donors tested for CMVIgM, 108 tested positive (1.69%) and 6,277 tested negative (98.31%). Among the 108 CMVIgM-positive donors, 69.44% had an S/CO ratio between 1 and 2, while 5.56% had an S/CO ratio >5. Regarding the association with time, the CMVIgM positivity rate was highest in November (3.14%) and lowest in February (0.32%), a difference that was statistically significant (p < 0.05). The CMVIgM positivity rate was higher among first-time donors (2.56%) than among repeat donors (1.55%), a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). The positivity rate was also higher in females (2.26%) than in males (1.47%), a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). No significant difference was observed regarding age. Association with occupation: The CMVIgM positivity rate among professionals (1.13%) was lower than that among manual workers (2.15%) and other groups (1.52%), a difference that was statistically significant (p < 0.05).

Conclusions: The CMVIgM positivity rate among blood donors at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion was 1.69%. The rate was 2.56% among first-time donors, which was higher than the 1.55% observed among repeat donors. The rate of CMVIgM positivity was 2.26% among females, higher than the 1.47% observed in males. No significant difference was found regarding age. The rate of CMVIgM positivity was 1.13% among intellectuals, lower than the other groups.
