COLLECTION EFFICIENCY OF PERIPHERAL BLOOD HEMATOPOIETIC STEM CELLS FOLLOWING APHERESIS AT THE STEM CELL BANK – NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEMATOLOGY AND BLOOD TRANSFUSION FROM 2022-2024
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the collection efficiency (CE) of hematopoietic stem cells from peripheral blood following apheresis at National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion between 2022 and 2024.
Study design: A descriptive study of all apheresis procedures performed at Stem Cell Bank – National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, from January 2022 to December 2024.
Study Subjects: 195 apheresis procedures performed on donors and patients to collect peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cells using automated apheresis systems.
Results: The study included 110 allogeneic donors and 85 patients. The mean CE was 47.75%. The average cell dose per single apheresis procedure was 7.71 x 10⁶ CD34+ cells/kg for the patient group and 9.17 x 10⁶ CD34+ cells/kg for the donor group. Multivariate analysis indicated that the pre-apheresis CD34+ cell count and the number of total blood volumes (TBV) processed were inversely linearly correlated with CE.
Conclusion: Peripheral blood stem cell apheresis at the unit achieved stable CE, with a high rate of reaching the target cell dose within the first procedure.
