HEMOGLOBIN RECOVERY AMONG REGULAR BLOOD DONORS DEFERRED FOR LOW HEMOGLOBIN
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To describe the characteristics of regular blood donors deferred because of hemoglobin (Hb) <120 g/L and to evaluate Hb recovery after counseling.
Methods: A prospective longitudinal descriptive study was conducted among 400 regular blood donors at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion from March to August 2023; 369 underwent Hb reassessment approximately 4 weeks later.
Results: Females accounted for 97.0%, donors aged 18–24 years for 54.75%, and students for 45.5%. Overall, 99.75% had Hb from 90 to <120 g/L, and 50.2% had both MCV <80 fL and MCH <27 pg. Among 369 reassessed donors, mean Hb increased from 114.77 g/L to 120.61 g/L (p < 0.05), and 66.1% reached Hb ≥120 g/L. Mean Hb increases were 7.23 g/L in the regular dietary-adherence group, 7.01 g/L in the regular lifestyle-adherence group, and 6.09 g/L in the iron-supplementation group; the distribution of Hb increase differed among subgroups within each counseling component (Kruskal–Wallis, p < 0.001).
Conclusion: Hb improved after counseling and follow-up in most regular donors deferred for low Hb; the observational design does not establish an independent effect of any single counseling component.
