INCIDENCE OF DIABETES AND HIGH FASTING BLOOD SUGAR IN VEGETARIANS AND RELATED FACTORS

Abstract

Background: The health problems associated with vegetarianism have not been well studied. The study investigated the status of diabetes and fasting hyperglycemia of vegetarians. Methods: Cross-sectional study design, surveying 252 vegetarian monks and Buddhists in Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai, Assessment of diabetes status and fasting hyperglycemia with fasting blood glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL. Results: In this study, which investigated the fasting blood sugar of 252 vegetarians, 7 people had glucose ≥ 126mg/dl (2.8%). The older the vegetarians, the higher the prevalence of diabetes (<40 years old: 3.7%; 40-60 years old: 9.5%; >60 years old: 14.5%) with p=0.017. The proportion of vegetarians with blood sugar problems in overweight people was higher than that of people with normal health (19.1% vs. 7.1%) with p=0.021. Vegetarians who drink coffee regularly have higher diabetes problems than occasional and rare users (20.5%-7.8%-5.9%) with p=0.019. Conclusion: Follow a complete, scientific, reasonable, nutritionally balanced diet for good health and promote the benefits of a vegetarian diet.
