SURGICAL OUTCOMES OF FOLLICULAR THYROID CANCER

Abstract

Objective: to evaluate the surgical outcomes of follicular thyroid cancer at K Hospital. Subjects and Methods: a retrospective combined with prospective cohort study of 48 follicular thyroid carcinoma patients treated by surgery at K Hospital from January 2016 to July 2020. Results: The percentage of patients who had undergone total thyroidectomy and lobectomy were 75% and 25%, in each group neck dissection had been performed in 66.7% and 0% respectively. Most patients had stage I postoperative (75%), 12.5% patients in stage IV. The most common complications were transient recurrent laryngeal nerve injury and hypocalcemia, with the incidence at 72 hours after surgery were 14.6% and 18.8%. One patient had been persistent hypoparathyroidism after 14 months of follow-up. Cervical lymph node dissection increased the risk of hypocalcemia postoperative significantly (p<0.05). Conclusion: Surgery of follicular thyroid carcinoma is safe and effective.
