Abstract

Purpose: To describe the clinical and subclinical characteristics of patients with acute appendicitis treated at the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Saint Paul General Hospital in the first quarter of 2021. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study. Results: The majority of patients are male (56%), ranging in age from 15 to 64 years (58%), and students accounting for 38%. Most of the patients were admitted to the hospital with abdominal pain (88%), the rests were fever (8%) and vomiting and nausea (4%). The patient had abdominal pain in the right iliac fossa (46%), around the umbilicus (26%), in the epigastrium (26%) then localized mainly in the right iliac fossa (94%). Most patients have dull, continuous abdominal pain (80%) with digestive disorders (60% of vomiting, nausea). 74% of patients had a fever. The majority of patients had abdominal wall reaction (88%) and Mc Burney’s point pain (84%). Conclusion: Most of the patients were admitted to the hospital with symptoms of abdominal pain, pain in the right iliac fossa, fever, abdominal wall reaction, and McBurney’s point.
