Abstract

Objectives: This study investigates the characteristics and factors affecting the treatment results of massive burn patients. Subjects and methods: Retrospective study on 591 burn patients ≥ 50% total burn surface area (TBSA) treated at the National Burns Hospital from 1/1/2017 to 31/12/ 2020. Patients were divided into two groups of survival and death, and were compared in terms of the characteristics, manifestation and outcome. Results: The massive burn patients was found mainly in adults (88.25%); mostly in men (79.58%); the majority lived in rural areas (70.33%). The main cause of burns was dry heat (76.69%); Inhalation injury accounted for 34.1%. Mortality rate was 47.21%. Multivariate analysis showed that the increased age, no health insurance, climbed burn extent and deep burn area, inhalation injury and mechanical ventilation were independently associated with mortality (p < 0,05). Conclusion: The mortality rate in massive burn patients was still very high. The increased age, no health insurance, climbed burn extent and deep burn area, inhalation injury and mechanical ventilation were independently associated with mortality in massive burn patients.
