Main Article Content
Abstract
Chronic functional constipation can lead to complications that affect the physical and psychological development of children. Polyethylene 3350 (PEG 3350) is recommended as a first-line laxative in the treatment of constipation for people of all ages. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of polyethylene glycol 3350 in the treatment of childhood chronic functional constipation at Thanh Hoa Pediatric Hospital. Materials and methods: a prospective study described a case series of 74 patientswith chronic functional constipation according to ROME IV criteria at Thanh Hoa Pediatric Hospital. Results: The median age was 41 months (15months-10 years). Before treatment, solid stools (type 1 and 2 in Bristol classification) and straining to poop were common manifestations, accounting for 70.2% and 83.8%, respectively. After treatment with PEG 3350, the average number of bowel movements per week and the percentage of children with soft stools increased. The symptoms of bloody stools, anal pain, straining to poop and holding in poop improved markedly. The effectiveness of treatment with the regimen using PEG 3350 gradually increased from 68.9% after 1 month to 86.5% and 94.6% after 2 months and 3 months. Conclusion: Polyethylene glycol 3350 has highly effective and safe in the treatment of chronic functional constipation in children.
