Abstract

Background: Chronic pancreatitis with dilated pancreatic duct is indicated for Frey’s surgery when medical and other methods fail. Materials and methods: Retrospective study of 22 cases (TH) who underwent Frey’s surgery for chronic pancreatitis with dilated pancreatic duct at the General Surgery Department - Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital from January 2018 – August 2021. Describe pathological characteristics of chronic pancreatitis with dilated pancreatic duct and review early results of Frey’s surgery in treatment. Results: In 22 patients who underwent Frey’s surgery: 17 men (77.3%) and 5 women (22.7%), mean age 53.27 ± 14.18, Most of them were in the underweight group, accounting for 59.1%, the mean BMI was 18.49 ± 4.15. Clinical symptoms: abdominal pain (77.3%) and the mean preoperative VAS score of 6.09 ± 3.64 points, jaundice (22.7%), bowel disorders (68.2%). The mean preoperative blood glucose was 146.59 ± 45.28 mg/dl. The mean operative time was 139.09 ± 18.23 minutes. There were 3 cases of complications during surgery (13.6%), 3 cases of complications after surgery (13.6%). The mean VAS score 3 months after surgery was 1.5 ± 1.51 points; There is a statistically significant difference in the mean value of VAS score before and after surgery (T test = 7.21; p < 0.001). There was a statistically significant difference in mean BMI, blood sugar before and after surgery (t-test; p < 0.001). Conclusion: Chronic pancreatitis is more common in males. Frey’s surgery is effective in reducing pain in 95.5% of patients, improving the patient's quality of life after surgery and having fewer complications.
