EARLY RESULTS OF 3D ENDOSCOPIC RESECTION OF THE RECTUM FOR THE TREATMENT OF RECTAL CANCER IN THE ELDERLY

Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate early results of three-dimensional laparoscopic anterior resection in elderly rectal cancer patients. Patients and Methods: Retrospective study on 72 rectal cancer patients (≥ 60 years old) underwent three-dimensional laparoscopic anterior resection at National Cancer Hospital between May 2018 and September 2021. Results: Mean age was 67.9 ± 5.8 (60-82). The 60-69 age group accounted for the highest percentage (65.2%). Hypertension was the most frequently encountered comorbidity (37.5%). Most patients had early-stage (stage I, 30.6%; stage II, 44.4%). All patients had negative margins after surgery. The mean number of lymph nodes dissected was 12.3 ± 3.2. The mean operation time was 133.6 ± 19.3 minutes (range: 90-180). None had intraoperative complications. Only 8.4% of patients had postoperative complications. Conclusions: Three-dimensional laparoscopic anterior resection in elderly rectal cancer patients was safe, feasible while maintaining oncologic criteria.
