Abstract

Objective: The study was conducted to analyze the direct medical cost of type 2 diabetes mellitus treatment at the District 8 Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City from 2019 to 2021. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted by collecting and analyzing data of all hospital visits of patients with type 2 diabetes at District 8 Hospital from 2019 to 2021. The data was aggregated, processed, and analyzed by Excel. Results: From 2019 to 2021, the total number of hospital visits for type 2 diabetes at District 8 Hospital was 28,002 with health insurance, of which the number of outpatient visits was 27,538, accounting for 98.3%. The average age of the study sample was 60.15 (±13.12) years old. The analysis results showed that the average cost per inpatient visit was 3,694,295 ± 3,136,003 VND and the average cost per outpatient visit was 462,588 ± 238,392 VND. The total direct medical cost of the sample was 14.4 billion VND, with medication costs and testing costs accounting for high proportions of 69.4% and 13.5% respectively. When comparing the characteristics of the inpatient group to those of the outpatient group, there were differences as follows: 100% of inpatients had comorbidities, the percentage of women was higher, and the mean age was higher. Conclusion: The study showed that the cost per inpatient treatment visit was high, placing an economic burden on patients and the healthcare system. To reduce the treatment burden, diabetes management should begin at an early stage by adopting a healthy diet, routine physical exercise, and having early access to diabetes care.
