STAGES OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY BASED ON STANDARD DIGITAL RETINAL IMAGING

Abstract

Purpose: To stage diabetic retinopathy (DR) based on standard digital retinal imaging. Materials and methods: The study was conducted on a data file of 400 standard digital retinal images of patients diagnosed with diabetic mellitus, the clasification is based on the International Council of Opthalmology’s clasification of diabetic retinopathy. Results: In 400 retinal images from the data file, the number of eyes without signs of DR (R0) was the highest with 241 eyes, accounting for 60.3%; the second highest belonged to moderate non-proliferative DR (R2) with 18.3%; mild non-proliferative DR (R1) accounted for 8%; severe non-proliferative DR(R3) and proliferative DR (R4) were the same ratio, accounted for 4,3% and 4%, respectively; there were 21 substandard shots and could not be staged. Conclusion: The retinal damage of patients with DR is mainly at the R0 stage which mean there is no clinical manifestations, so periodic monitoring plays a very important role in the prevention and reducing the progression of DR as well as early detection and treatment to avoid serious complications.
