Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the direct medical cost of chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) management following classifcation of GOLD (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease) based on big data analysis of national Social Health Insurance database in 2020. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to calculate direct medical cost of COPD patients classified by GOLD. Results: Annual average direct medical costs per patient in GOLD classified A, B, C and D were 3.1; 4.6; 12.2; and 58.6 million VND, respectively. Total economic burden of patients in GOLD classified A, B, C and D were 321.026.108.935, 326.829.474.623, 1.852.691.299.408 and 52.479.725.849 VND. Medication cost accounted for a significant proportion in the cost of treatment. Conclusion: The results of study provided information about the economic burden of COPD treatment in Vietnam. Measures to improve COPD management in the early stage can prevent progressing to the late stage and decrease the economic burden of COPD in Vietnam.
