Abstract

Objective: Analyse the relationship between clinical features and magnetic resonance imaging of cerebral venous thrombosis. Subjects and methods: A prospective, descriptive study of 38 patients with cerebral venous thrombosis treated at the Department of Neurology, Bach Mai Hospital from March 2020 to June 2021. Results: The mean age was 42.4 ± 14.8, the male/female ratio was 1.2:1. The acute onset was seen in 6 patients (15.8%), subacute in 31 (81.6%) and chronic in 1 (2.6%). The symptom onset of most cases was headache (94.7%), hemiparesis (34.2%) and seizure (28.9%). 25 patients (65.8%) had parenchymal brain lesions in MRI, including venous infarct (31.6%), hemorrhage (21.1%), hemorrhagic transformation (18.4%). The most common sites of thrombosis were superior sagittal sinus (73.7%), transverse sinus (63.2%), and sigmoid sinus (47.4%). Seizure symptoms were related to brain parenchymal damage (p<0.05). There was no relationship between the clinical symptoms and the site of thrombosis. Conclusion: Headache, hemiplegia, cranial nerve palsies, vomiting-nausea, blurred vision, language disorders, impaired consciousness and meningeal signs were not related to brain parenchymal lesions. Seizure symptoms were related to brain parenchymal damage (p<0.05). There was no relationship between the clinical symptoms and the site of thrombosis.
