Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: Survey of 100 hypertensive patients examined in Binh Thanh District Hospital by testing fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and HbA1c to determine the prevalence of pre-diabetes and evaluate related factors in hypertensive patients. Results: The prevalence of pre-diabetes in hypertensive patients was 66.0%. The prevalence of pre-diabetes based on only impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or HbA1c was 28.0% and 64.0%, respectively. Family history of diabetes melitus, overweight or obesity are two independent risk factors of pre-diabetes in hypertensive patients. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 130 mmHg and pulse pressure (PP) ≥ 50 mmHg are associated with the prevalence of pre-diabetes in hypertensive patients. The prevalence of albuminuria and left ventricular hypertrophy in patients with both hypertension and pre-diabetes are 30.3% and 33.3%, respectively. Conclusion: The prevalence of pre-diabetes in hypertensive patients is quite high. Early screening for pre-diabetes is needed in patients with family history of diabetes melitus, overweight or obesity. There is no association between pre-diabetes and albuminuria or left ventricular hypertrophy in hypertensive patients.
