Abstract

Objectives: Treatment method that combines modern medicine with traditional medicine to solve the symptoms caused by osteoarthritis pain is very common in clinical practice. The combination of Khu phong tru thap NEUTOLIN (NTL) derived from the traditional formula Juan-bi-tang and meloxicam was selected for study to anti-inflammatory effect in models of inflammation. Materials and methods: Material of this study is Khu phong tru thap NEUTOLIN and meloxicam. In the carrageenan-induced paw edema model, mice were induced with carrageenan plantar edema, 3 hours after injection, mice with swollen paws more than 50% compared to the initial time were put into the test. Evaluation of the anti-inflammatory effect by the percentage reduction in the volume of mice paws per day for 6 days. In the model of granuloma formation following implantation of cotton pellets in mice, mice were induced granulomatosis with cotton balls on their backs, randomly divided into groups and given drug for 5 days; to day 6, carry out dissection, determine the dry weight of each granuloma. Evaluation of anti-inflammatory effect by percentage reduction in granulomatous volume. Results: In the carrageenan-induced paw edema model: Khu phong tru thap NEUTOLIN 2.05g/kg (NTL1) had statistically significant reduction in the paw volume compared with control group on all days; Khu phong tru thap NEUTOLIN 1.03g/kg (NTL2) had statistically significant reduction in the paw volume compared with control group on days 4, 5 and 6. Khu phong tru thap NEUTOLIN 2.05g/kg +meloxicam 8mg/kg (PH1) had a statistically significant reduction in the paw volume compared to the control group on all days and a statistically significant reduction compared with the group of meloxicam 8mg/kg (M1) on day 1. Khu phong tru thap NEUTOLIN 1.03g/kg + meloxicam 4mg/kg (PH2) had statistically significant reduction in the paw volume compared with the control group on all days. In the model of granuloma formation following implantation cotton pellets in mice: The level of weight loss of dry granulomas in all 6 groups was statistically significant compared with the control group; the M1 group, the NTL1 group and the PH1 group of weight reduction were similar; the meloxicam 4mg/kg (M2) group, the NTL2 group and the PH2 group had similar dry granuloma weight reduction. Conclusion: Khu phong tru thap NEUTOLIN had acute and chronic anti-inflammatory effects similar to meloxicam. The combination of Khu phong tru thap NEUTOLIN 2.05g/kg and meloxicam 8mg did not increase the anti-inflammatory effect compared with using each drug alone; The combination of Khu phong tru thap NEUTOLIN 1.03g/kg and meloxicam 4mg increased the anti-inflammatory effect compared to using each drug alone. There are no lesions on the gastric mucosa of mice in all groups after 6 days of taking the drug.
