PREVALENCE AND SOME FACTORS RELATED TO SLEEP DISORDERS IN CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

Abstract
Objective: To determine the prevalence of sleep problems and associated factors in children with autism. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study, using the Chidren Sleep Habit Questionare (CHSQ) reported by main caregiver on 117 autistic children aged 24 - 60 months at Vietnam National Children's Hospital. Results: About 81.2% of children with autism had sleep disorders. Data analysis indicated that severe autism, comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, functional constipation was related to sleep disorders. The habits before going to bed at night such as drinking milk, especially drinking ≥ 150ml, sleeping time after 9p.m, watching the phone/ipad/TV, turning on the light when falling on sleep were associated with increased risk of sleep disorders in children with autism. Conclusion: Sleep disorders are very common in children with autism. It suggest that evaluation of sleep problems and their associated factors should form part of the comprehensive care of children with autism.
