Main Article Content
Abstract
A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2018 on 281 secondary school students from 02 semi-boarding high schools for ethnic minorities in Tuan Giao district, Dien Bien province, to describe the current situation of vitamin D and zinc deficiency. The results showed that the rate of vitamin D was low and deficient was 10.7%; the risk rate of vitamin D deficiency was 79.4%. The average serum 25(OH)D concentration was 64.3 nmol/L ± 12.5. There was no statistically significant difference in vitamin D ratio and 25(OH)D concentration between age groups. The overall zinc deficiency rate was 58.4%; highest in the 11-year-old group (71.6%). Average serum zinc value was 10.1 ± 1.9 mol/L, there was a statistically significant difference in mean serum zinc value between age groups (p < 0.01) and between 11 years old and 14 years old group (p<0.001). There was a relationship between vitamin D deficiency, zinc deficiency and micronutrient deficiency, family economic status, ethnicity, gender, and residential status. Therefore, it is necessary to have coordinated solutions to improve vitamin D and zinc deficiency such as improving the quality of children's meals at school and at home, supplementing with micronutrients.
