Abstract

Objective: To investigate the quality of restorations and periodontal status of metal-ceramic crowns after 3 years. Material and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study on 84 teeth, which had metal-ceramic crowns restored by students of Odonto-Stomatology 3 years ago, at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City. The quality of crown were examined and evaluated according to CDA (California Dental Association) standards. The periodontal status of the restorations was assessed through the indexes of PI, GI, DPP, and BOP. Results: Satisfied restorations achieved a high rate of 91.7%, of which 11.9% of crowns were rated R (perfect); 79.8% of crowns are rated S (acceptable), 6% are rated T (requiring replacement or preventive repair), 2.4% are rated V (requiring immediate replacement). Plaque index is at level 0 (PI=0) with the rate of 29.8%, accounting for nearly 1/3 of restorations. The index of gingivitis from mild to moderate (GI=1, GI=2) accounted for 82.1%, there was no restorations of severe gingivitis. Restorations with bleeding gums (BOP index) accounts for ½ of the total restorations. Meanwhile, the majority of restorations had a normal gingival depth of 92.9%, with 7.1% of restorations having pathological periodontal pockets. Conclusion: The quality of metal-ceramic crown restorations according to CDA has a high satisfaction rate. The periodontal condition began to become inflamed after 3 years of use when the gingivitis index increased. However, the indicators of gingival depth are mostly within normal limits.
