IMAGING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE INTERNAL CAROTID AND VERTEBROBASILAR ARTERY SYSTEM IN PATIENTS WITH ISCHEMIC STROKE

Abstract

Objectives: To study on imaging characteristics of the internal carotid and vertebrobasilar  artery system on 64-slice computed tomography in patients with ischemic stroke. Subjects and methods: Prospective, descriptive study on 74 patients aged 18 years and older who were diagnosed with cerebral infarction, treated at the Stroke Department, 103 Military Hospital. Results: The majority of ischemic stroke patients in our study were caused by atherosclerotic plaque, accounting for 77%. The atherosclerotic plaque morphology was mainly non-calcified and mixed. The lesion of the ipsilateral internal carotid artery was mainly mild stenosis, accounting for 63.5%, while the lesion of the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery was mainly significant stenosis (> 70%), accounting for 64.8%. The lesion of the vertebrobasilar artery was mainly found in mild stenosis, occupying 78.4%. Most patients had  good to moderate collateral circulation.
