Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from July 2021 to June 2022 on 59 patients, included inpatients at the department of Internal Medicine and outpatients at Outpatient department of HaNoi Medical University hospital, diagnosed with gout according to the Bennett – Wood 1968 criteria. Results: In 59 gout patients, the rate of corticosteroid use was 62.7%, of which only 27.1% prescribed by doctors, 21.6% intentionally took steroid without medical advice and 37.8% deliberately increased the dosage. Common undesired effects are drug-induced adrenal insufficiency (78.4%), osteoporosis (72.9%), hypertension (54.1%). Regarding to patients’ level of understanding, 70.3% never actively learned about drugs. The proportion of patients who understood the therapeutic and undersired effects of corticosteroid was 62.2 and 45.9%, respectively. The rate of patients consulted about corticosteroid by medical staff was only 62.2%. Conclusion: The rate of using corticosteroid in gout patients was high, but their understanding level about corticosteroid was average. Medical staff, especially attending doctors, should positively consult and educate patients about the disease as well as drugs to achieve better treatment outcomes.
