Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and the second leading cause of death after lung cancer around the world. Breast cancer metastasized to the brain in 10 to 30% of cases. Stereotactic radiosurgery is a modern treatment for brain metastatic lesion that provided good local control, improved symptoms, prolonged survival and reduced toxicity on normal tissue. Our study aims to evaluate the outcome of Gamma Knife radiosurgery for brain metastasis of breast cancer. Methods: We analyzed 36 patients with brain metastatic breast cancer from July 2019 to June 2022. Selected patients have brain metastases from 1 to 10 tumors, size ≤ 3cm, KPS score ≥ 60. Patients were treated by stereotactic radiosurgery using Leksell Gamma Knife ICON unit (Elekta AB) with dose of 20 – 24, 18 – 20Gy for lesions measuring < 2, 2.1 – 3 cm, respectively. Patients were assessed for clinical symptoms and imaging response according to RANO criteria at 3, 6 months. Results: In our study, the rate of control in the brain at 3 months was 91.7%, and at 6 months was 75%. Overall survival time was 15.0 ± 4.3 months. Overall survival rate at 6 months was 82.3%; 1 year was 56.1%, 2 years was 39.9%. Conclusion: Gamma Knife radiosurgery is an effective treatment for brain metastasis of breast cancer.
