Abstract

Introduction: Today, along with the socio-economic development, the influence of different cultures through media channels has led to adolescents having the opportunity to learn about and engage in early sexual activity. But such information is often inaccurate, unscientific, unverified and less up-to-date, leading to quite serious consequences for teenagers who are still curious and like to discover new things. In particular, premarital sex and unintended pregnancy are health concerns of concern among adolescents. In Ho Chi Minh City, there are still few studies on safe sex in this age group. That is the goal of this study. Aim: Determine the percentage of students with correct knowledge, correct practice and related factors such as characteristics of research subjects, sources of information about sexual safety of students at Ban Co Secondary School, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City. Methodology:  The cross-sectional study was conducted on 360 subjects who were students in grades 8 and 9 (corresponding to the ages of 14 and 15) of Ban Co Secondary School, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, from April to July 2019. Information obtained is based on a set of 30-question pre-prepared questionnaires to survey the knowledge and practice of research subjects by face-to-face interviews. Results: The percentage of students with correct general knowledge about safe sex is 59.2% (95% CI: 0.54-0.64). Knowledge about the concept of safe sex accounted for the highest rate 91.1% (95% CI: 0.88-0.94). The percentage of students with correct general practice about safe sex is high 96.4%, (95% CI: 0.93-0.98), of which the majority of students have never had sex 91, 9% (95% CI: 0.88-0.94). Among sexually active children, 65.5% (95% CI: 0.47-0.80) used a condom and 57.1% (95% CI: 0.25-0.84) correct management of genital abnormalities. There are 66.4% (95% CI: 0.61-0.71) students find out more information about sex safety by themselves, the most sought-after information source is the internet, accounting for 87.8% (0.83-0.91). Found a statistically significant relationship between the percentage of correct general knowledge about safe sex with gender (p<0.001; 95% CI: 1.43-2.24), grade (or age) (p<0.001; 95% CI: 0.46-0.76), cohabitant (p=0.039; 95% CI: 0.54-0.98). There is a statistically significant relationship between the rate of correct practice of safe sex with student's gender (p=0.017; 95% CI: 1.01-1.10) and grade level (or age) (p=0.005; 95% CI: 0.36-0.69). Conclusion: The correct general knowledge and correct practices on sexual safety of students at Ban Co Secondary School account for a high percentage. This shows that it is necessary to maintain and promote health education for this subject.
