Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the efficiency of topical Levofloxacin 1.5% in prophylaxis of post - open ocular trauma endophthalmitis. Subjects and research methods: Descriptive study without a control group on 51 open ocular trauma eyes treated at the Eye Trauma department of Vietnam National Eye Hospital from 8/2021 to 4/2022. Results:The male/female ratio in the study was approximately 2.6/1. The mean age was 34.84±14.15 years old (the youngest was 3 years old and the oldest was 62 years old). In which, the two age groups with the highest rate were 16-45 years old (68%) and 46-60 years old (18%). The majority of patients have occupation as manual labor (70.0%). Most of the cases of injury were occupational accidents, accounting for 64%, 32% were daily-life accidents, and 4% were traffic accidents. The percentages of right eye/left eye injury were similar, 50% and 50%, respectively. The proportion of endophthalmitis was 4% (2/50). The microorganisms were positive gram bacteria () and fungi (). Risk factors included intraocular foreign bodies, trauma cataract, rural trauma, combination of variety of risk factors and injuries on Zone I. Factors not affecting the rate of endophthalmitis were size of injury and time to hospitalization. Conclusion: Topical Levofloxacin 1.5% is a less effective prophylaxis of post – open ocular trauma endophthalmitis.
