Abstract

Objective: To analyze the direct medical cost of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) treatment among insured patients at Le Van Thinh Hospital in 2021. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional, retrospective descriptive study was conducted by collecting data of all insured T2DM visits at Le Van Thinh hospital in 2021. The data was aggregated, sorted, and analyzed by Excel and SPSS. Results: In 2021, the sample size was 40.455 visits, the average age of the sample was 61.0 (±11.6) years; 59.1% were female; 69.3% had hypertension and dyslipidemia along with T2DM. The total direct medical cost were 18.8 billion VND, of which 4.4 billion CND was spent on insulin. Drugs and tests cost accounted for higher proportions than others (75.1% and 13.5%, respectively). The average cost of a T2DM treatment per visit was 4.114.537 ± 3.565.214 VND for inpatients and 449.495 ± 246.074 VND for outpatients. Conclusion: The results can support decision makers on allocating and adjusting the hospital budget in the most rational way in the context of financial autonomy.
