Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: Describe the situation of hypertension and its related factors in Quang Binh elderly people. Subjects and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 815 elderly persons at four communes in Quang Binh province. Results: The prevalence of hypertension was 52%, 65.3% of those were aware of their situation, and 42.4% have not received treatment yet. The hypertension rate rose accordingly to age geoups (from 45.9% among people aged 60-69 years to 64.0% in those aged 80 years and older) and BMI levels (from 43.2% among those with malnutrition to 59.9% in overweight people). This rate was higher among people with abdominal obese (51.4%) compared to that for non-obese people (40.5%) and among people with a history of cardiovascular disease (61.2%) than that for people without cardiovascular diseasehistory (35.7%). Conclusion: The Quang Binh elderly people have a high prevalence of hypertension, with more than a third of them unaware of their situation, and nearly 60% have not been treated yet. Age, BMI, abdominal obesity, and a reported history of cardiovascular disease are factors related to hypertension in the elderly.
