EVALUATION OF RETICULOCYTE HEMOGLOBIN CONTENT VALUES IN DIAGNOSING IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA OF FIRST TRIMESTER PREGNANCY
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objects: Determining the value of reticulocyte hemoglobin content (Ret-He) in diagnosing iron deficiency anemia of pregnant women in the first trimester, establishing cut-off values and evaluating specificity and sensitivity. This article studies the correlation between reticulocyte hemoglobin content and serum ferritin in iron deficiency anemia. Methods: Study of descriptive cross-sectional. Total 174 first-trimester pregnant women who visited Le Van Thinh Hospital from 12/2021 to 8/2022 were included in the study. Blood
samples collected from the subjects were submitted to a complete blood count and a serum ferritin test. Data were analyzed by comparing the groups with median and quartiles, analyzing Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves and Spearman correlation. Results: Iron deficiency anemia is defined as hemoglobin < 11g/dL and serum ferritin < 30mg/dL. Analyzing the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve to calculate the area under the curve of 0.829, with a reticulocyte hemoglobin content cut-off of 31.3 mg/dL with a sensitivity of 82.1% and a specificity of 83.3%. There was a strong positive correlation between reticulocyte hemoglobin content and serum ferritin (r=0.652; p<0.001). Conclusion: The reticulocyte hemoglobin content is an early indicator of iron deficiency anemia in first trimester pregnancy. In addition, reticulocyte hemoglobin content can be a good predictor in assessing bone marrow iron storage.
