Abstract

A cross-sectional study on 571 children 11-14 years old at ethnic minority boarding schools in Dien Bien province was conducted to explore some associated factors to vitamin D status through assessment of serum 25(OH)D concentrations. The results of multivariate linear regression analysis showed a negative linear correlation between body fat percentage, serum retinol, ferritin, and hemoglobin concentrations with serum 25(OH)D concentrations. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that children with low and depleted iron storage or Hmong ethnicity had a 2.0 times higher risk of low and vitamin D deficiency than children with normal iron storage or other ethnicities. (p < 0.05); Female or children who did not have lunch at school had a 3.0 times higher risk of low and vitamin D deficiency than males or students who had lunch at school (p<0.001). Future intervention shouldinclude micronutrient supplementation the prevention of vitamin D deficiency, at the same time, giving priority to girls and children of the H'mong ethnic group, and promoting outdoor activities in schools.
