Abstract

Sexual dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes with neurological complications has not been paid enough attention compared to its impact on quality of life, making patients unable to satisfy their psycho-physiological needs, which poses a challenge to the marital relationship, and to treatment adherence. Objective: Sexual dysfunction in neurologically certified 2nd stage male patients. Subjects and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study on 61 male patients with type 2 diabetes with neurological complications at the Department of Endocrinology, Bach Mai hospital from 07/2021 to 07/2022. Results: The mean age of the study group was 58.14 ± 7.53. The mean duration of illness of the study group was 9.27 ± 3.2. The mean value of HbA1C of the whole group was 10.2 ± 3.7. The number of patients with HbA1C ≥ 7.0 is higher than 40/61, accounting for 65.57%. The most common moderate-level peripheral nerve complications accounted for 47.1%, the rate of severe neurological complications with 21.3%. The number of patients with erectile dysfunction accounted for 68.7%. In the HbA1C control group that did not reach the target, the rate of erectile dysfunction was higher than that of the group without erectile dysfunction, the rate of erectile dysfunction was 69.05% compared with the group without erectile dysfunction was 57.9%. In the group of time of disease detection (>5 years), the rate of erectile dysfunction (61.9%) was higher than that of the group without erectile dysfunction (31.59%). In the group of severe peripheral nerve complications, the rate of erectile dysfunction was 28.58% compared with the group without erectile dysfunction was 10.54%. Conclusion: Sexual dysfunction in male patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with neurological complications in our study accounted for 68.7%, in which the longer the duration of diabetes and the level of the more severe the degree of peripheral neuropathy, the higher the frequency of erectile dysfunction, so it is necessary to detect it early and avoid affecting the patient's quality of life.
