Abstract

Introduction: Sexual life is an important component in a person’s quality of life. In Viet Nam, sex is still considered a sensitive and private matter. Although there have been many reports on the results of total hip replacement (THR), there are no studies on sexual activity after THR. The aims of this study are to evaluate the influence of THR surgery on male sexual performance and what the concerns of patients related to sexual activity after THR may entail. Methods: A coss-sectional descriptive study by using an anonymous questionnaire adminisstered to men, 18 – 60 years old, who have undergone total hip replacement surgery after 3 months in Viet Duc Hospital, in a convenient way. Results: There were 90 patients who responded meeting the study criteria. The mean age of patients interviewed was 41,51 years. A mean of 22,73 months after the appearance of his pain. Preoperatively the majority of patients (88,9%) experienced difficulties. The main causes of sexual difficulties were pain followed by joint stiffness. The median time to the resumption of sexual activity was 65,25 days post-op. Increased frequency of sexual activity after THR was 22,2%. In patient’s opinion, the implementation of THR improves sexual relation. The most troubling sexual problem after THR was the fear of dislocation. The common concerns regarding sexual activity of patients were joint longevity and safe sex positions. Most did not consult with a physician due to the private nature of the topic. A booklet was chosen by the majority as a source of information. Conclusions: Total hip replacement surgery improved problems in sexual activities caused by hip disease. Dislocation was the most common concern of patients during intercourse after surgery. A simple bookklet will make communication with physicians and their partners more comfortable. Recommendations: Sexual activities should be not marginalized, but should be assessed before and after surgery. The role of a multidisciplinary team: physiotherapisst, surgeon as they should provide clear information.
