Abstract

Objectives: To describe clinical and paraclinical characteristics in children undergoing gastrointestinal surgery with surgical site infection at Children's Hospital 1. Methods: Retrospective study, case series description of 403 pediatric patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery admitted to the Outpatient Department of Children's Hospital 1 from January 1, 2019, to December 30, 2021. Results: The surgical site infection rate was 13.8%, mainly in children from 1 month to 24 months (64.3%). The male/female ratio is 1/1.24. Minor bowel surgery had the highest surgical site infection rate (43%). Fever accounted for 33%; The incision is swollen, hot, red, and painful, and pus drains from the skin, under the skin, accounting for 13.3%. 89.5% of pus culture samples were isolated from bacteria, of which 1 type of causative agent for surgical site infection accounted for 61.8%, and Gram-negative bacteria caused 67.3%. Conclusions: It is necessary to proactively examine, detect and treat surgical site infections early for pediatric patients with a history of gastrointestinal surgery; there are comorbidities, minor bowel surgery, and when the results of the antibiogram are not available, a combination antibiotic with a therapeutic spectrum for Gram-negative bacteria should be used.
