LARGE CELL NEUROENDOCRINE CARCINOMA ARISING FROM MIDDLE MEDIASTINUM - CASE REPORT AND DOCUMENTARY OVERVIEW
Main Article Content
Abstract
The 2015 WHO classification (updated 2021), neuroendocrine tumors includes: Small cell carcinoma (mixed small cell variant); Neuroendocrine large cell carcinoma (mixed large cell variant); Carcinoid tumors (typical and atypical); Pre-infiltrating lesions (diffuse pulmonary neuroendocrine hyperplasia). Previously, neuroendocrine large cell carcinoma was classified as large cell cancer; this is a high - grade cancer; diagnosis should be based on pathology and immunohistochemical staining; treatment is very difficult and currently there is no standard multimodality protocol; The mortality rate of the disease is high. Neuroendocrine tumors can occur in any location of the thorax, but involvement in the mediastinum is rare. We report a case of neuroendocrine large cell carcinoma in the mediastinum, definite diagnosis and treated at the National Lung Hospital. The discussion section reviews the current state of diagnostic and therapeutic criteria for this disease, updates recent advances in understanding of the underlying pathogenesis, and opportunities to improve treatment for patient.
